N.C. License Plate Frequently Asked Questions
Why is NCWHF launching a specialty license plate?
This program creates a small but recurring flow of funds that can be used for our conservation projects. Many of our members and supporters have also asked for the program as a way to visibly demonstrate their support for the NCWHF.
When will I receive my new plate?
One gross payment will be sent to the DMV with our first 300 applications. You will receive your plate in the mail within 6 to 8 months from this first order. Your new special plate will have a registration sticker expiring on the same month as your existing plate.
Will the plate look like the picture on the web site?
We are finalizing the design to make sure it meets the DMV specifications. There will be some minor changes but our goal is to have a plate that youâll be proud to display on your vehicle.
Where does the $20 fee go?
The total cost to have the plate is actually $40. We collect $20 with your application. $10 of that goes to the NCWHF and $10 goes to the DMV's Special Registration Plate Account that is used to help operate the seven state welcome centers. You will be billed for the other $20 by DMV as the standard vehicle registration fee.
Can I have a Personalized Specialty Plate?
Your NCWHF plate may be personalized. There will be only four spaces available for personalization. NCWHF will be assigned a "stacked" prefix or suffix (most likely WH), that will be part of the five digit license number leaving four spaces for personalization. The fee for the personalized plate will be $50 (plus your annual registration fee).
Can I relinquish my tag to someone else?
Only personalized tags can be relinquished. Once a numerical tag expires without renewal, that number can not be reissued.
Change your mind?
You may go back to a regular license tag at any time. There will be no refund of unused portion of fees.
Thank you for your support!
